● The Brief

Good morning. AMD just made its biggest bet yet that the future of AI runs through more than just chips. The company is acquiring World Labs, the "world model" startup founded by Stanford's Fei-Fei Li, for roughly $8.2 billion in an all-stock deal — the second-largest acquisition in AMD's history, behind only its $50 billion purchase of Xilinx. World Labs has been building AI systems that simulate three-dimensional environments, a research bet distinct from the large language models that have dominated the industry's attention. Li herself becomes chief scientist, giving AMD a marquee research figure as it tries to close the gap with Nvidia beyond raw hardware. AMD says the lab will keep operating independently until the deal closes later this year, but the move signals that chipmakers now see owning frontier AI research, not just supplying the compute for it, as part of the competitive fight. Below: today's five recent stories across markets, AI, policy, and security.
