Etsy Bans AI-Generated Recipes and Patterns, Citing Buyer Trust Concerns

Etsy is banning the sale of AI-generated recipes, patterns, and instructional guides on its marketplace, citing buyer confusion over AI content as one of the top barriers to shopping on its platform.

Etsy said Thursday it will prohibit merchants from selling AI-generated recipes, patterns, and instructional guides on its platform, marking one of the most direct restrictions the crafts-and-artisan marketplace has imposed on artificial intelligence-created content.

The ban covers "functional guides" produced using AI — including cooking recipes, crochet patterns, sewing instructions, and similar digital downloads — products that buyers purchase and then follow to produce a finished item themselves. Etsy said sellers will also be required to show an actual item made using the instructions rather than a simulated or AI-generated result, "so buyers know what to expect."

The company framed the move as a response to eroding confidence among its user base. In a notice to sellers, Etsy said buyer confusion over AI content had become a "top-three barrier to shopping more often on Etsy."

"Today, many active buyers say they can't tell which items involve AI-generated content," the company wrote. "And you, our seller community, have told us you're concerned about your work appearing alongside items that use AI in misleading ways, and that it's becoming harder for buyers to recognize your role in creating your items."

As part of the updated policies, Etsy is barring sellers from generating listings entirely by bot without any human involvement. Sellers will also be required to include at least one unedited photograph of the actual item being sold.

AI-generated art will remain permitted on the platform, provided that merchants "play a clear role in what they create and are transparent about the process," the company said. Sellers must still disclose when an item is created using AI and cannot represent AI-generated work as handmade or entirely their own.

Founded in 2005, Etsy has built its identity around craft makers and artisan goods, a reputation it has leaned into as it faces competition from Amazon, Walmart, and newer e-commerce entrants including TikTok, Temu, and Shein. The proliferation of AI-generated listings — particularly crochet patterns and similar digital products — has become a recurring challenge for the platform in recent years.

The new restrictions draw a sharper line between policing AI content and deploying it internally. Even as it tightens seller rules, Etsy has used artificial intelligence to build more detailed shopper profiles and improve search results. The company has also partnered with OpenAI on shopping features, including a ChatGPT application for product discovery.

Etsy is not alone in navigating the tension between AI utility and AI abuse. Amazon recently required sellers to label photos or videos featuring AI-generated people, following legislation mandating such disclosures.

The updated policies signal that marketplaces built on creator authenticity face a distinct kind of pressure — one where the perception of human craft may be as commercially significant as the products themselves. How rigorously Etsy enforces the new rules, and whether the changes meaningfully rebuild buyer confidence, will likely determine whether further restrictions follow.
