Mobileye Global announced Tuesday it will launch its own robotaxi service in the United States, planning to deploy an initial 100-vehicle fleet into a major American city in 2027 — a move that puts the self-driving technology supplier in direct competition with some of its own customers.
The Jerusalem-based company said the first deployment will be phased throughout 2027, with plans to scale the fleet to roughly 17,000 vehicles over the following five years.
Shares of Mobileye rose around 6% following the announcement.
"We believe there is an opportunity for a new approach — one built on deep autonomous-driving expertise, strong industry partnerships, and proven capabilities across the mobility ecosystem," CEO Amnon Shashua said in a statement.
The entry into robotaxi operations marks a significant strategic shift for Mobileye, which has built its business supplying autonomous-driving technology — including its Mobileye Drive platform — to automakers and fleet operators rather than running vehicles itself.
The company acknowledged the competitive tension directly. Mobileye said the move does not alter its commitment to existing customers, framing its operator ambitions as a "complementary path to market" that can "further demonstrate the capabilities of the Mobileye Drive platform at scale."
That framing reflects a balancing act the company will need to maintain as it competes against the same partners that rely on its technology stack.
The robotaxi sector has grown increasingly crowded in recent years. Alphabet's Waymo has expanded paid ride-hailing services across several U.S. cities, while Tesla has accelerated its own autonomous ride-hailing ambitions. Mobileye's entry signals that the supplier tier of the industry is no longer content to remain behind the scenes.
The company did not specify which U.S. city would serve as the initial launch market.
If Mobileye executes on its five-year scaling target, a fleet of 17,000 vehicles would represent one of the larger autonomous deployments in the country — underscoring the scale of the commercial bet the company is making on its own hardware and software stack.
The 2027 timeline gives Mobileye roughly 18 months to secure regulatory approvals, finalize vehicle partnerships, and select an operating market, all while managing the supplier relationships that remain central to its core business.
