OpenAI Launches GPT-4o with Enhanced Features and Desktop Version, Expanding Accessibility and Developer Options

OpenAI introduced a new AI model and a desktop version of ChatGPT with a revamped interface on Monday.

During a live-streamed event, OpenAI's CTO, Mira Murati, revealed the release of GPT-4o, accessible to all users, including those on the free tier. Murati described GPT-4o as "much faster" and enhanced in handling text, video, and audio content.

"This represents a significant advancement in user-friendliness," Murati noted.

Additionally, the updated model enhances the performance and speed of ChatGPT across 50 languages. It is also now accessible via OpenAI’s API, enabling developers to start creating applications with the new model immediately. GPT-4o offers double the speed and costs half as much as its predecessor, GPT-4 Turbo.

This launch marks one of OpenAI's major milestones following the introduction of ChatGPT Enterprise, the AI chatbot’s business-focused version, in August. OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap reported that the development of the business tier involved collaboration with over 20 diverse companies and took less than a year.

OpenAI, alongside tech giants like Microsoft and Google, leads the charge in the generative AI industry, as businesses across various sectors hasten to integrate AI-driven chatbots to stay competitive. This month, OpenAI competitor Anthropic unveiled its first enterprise solution and a free iPhone app.

According to PitchBook, the generative AI sector saw investments surge to $29.1 billion in 2023, with nearly 700 deals—a 260% increase from the previous year. Revenue in this market is expected to surpass $1 trillion within the next decade.

The rapid introduction of new AI services has sparked concerns among some industry experts about the potential risks and biases associated with untested technologies.

Since its debut in November 2022, ChatGPT quickly became the fastest-growing consumer app ever, amassing about 100 million weekly active users. OpenAI reports that over 92% of Fortune 500 companies have adopted the platform.
