Reddit shares surged 11% in extended trading on Thursday after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced the social media platform will join the S&P 500 on August 18, replacing real estate investment trust AvalonBay Communities.

The inclusion makes Reddit only the second pure-play social media company in the benchmark index. Meta is the other. Pinterest and Snap both went public before Reddit but hold smaller market capitalizations. Twitter held a place in the S&P 500 until Elon Musk acquired it in 2022; the platform, now called X, is owned by SpaceX.

The stock rally is consistent with a well-documented pattern in equity markets: when a company is added to a major index, fund managers who track that benchmark are compelled to buy shares to mirror the composition change, creating near-term demand pressure.

As part of the same round of index changes, Sun Communities will join the S&P MidCap 400, replacing Webster Financial, according to the S&P Dow Jones Indices release.

Reddit's inclusion comes at a complicated moment for the company. In late July, it reported its eighth consecutive quarter of revenue growth exceeding 60%, a streak that underscored the platform's sustained commercial expansion.

Despite the sales figures, the stock declined following that earnings report after the company told investors that its "search referrals were choppy" — language that amplified existing concerns about the platform's dependence on Google to acquire new users.

CEO Steve Huffman attributed the search instability to Google's increasing deployment of Gemini-powered AI Overviews, which can surface answers directly on the search results page rather than directing users to third-party sites like Reddit.

The company hosts online forums spanning thousands of topics and has positioned its user-generated content as a distinctive asset in an era when large language model developers have sought licensing agreements for training data.

Reddit's entry into the S&P 500 represents a significant milestone for a platform that completed its initial public offering in 2024, a long-anticipated debut that was watched closely as a gauge of investor appetite for social media properties. With the August 18 effective date approaching, institutional funds that track the index will need to acquire positions before the opening bell that morning, a dynamic that analysts say typically sustains elevated trading volume in the days surrounding an addition.
