Rivian's Autonomy+ advanced driver-assistance system has overtaken General Motors' Super Cruise in real-world highway performance but remains behind Tesla's FSD (Supervised) on non-highway roads and point-to-point driving, according to a multi-hundred-mile comparative evaluation conducted in Michigan.
The assessment, which included drives totaling hundreds of miles in both a Rivian R1T pickup and a 2025 Tesla Model Y running FSD (Supervised) v14, found the most meaningful gap between the two systems on city streets. Rivian's system currently detects traffic lights and road signs but only alerts the driver rather than responding to them. Tesla's system handled every signal, interchange, and exit ramp across nearly 200 miles of rural Michigan highways and downtown Ann Arbor streets without requiring manual intervention.
Tesla's in-vehicle Grok AI, queried during the drive, characterized the challenge directly: "Highways have predictable lanes, speed, fewer pedestrians and clear markings, making sensor fusion and path prediction simpler. City streets bring chaos, intersections, bikes, peds, construction and ambiguous rules that challenge even top AI vision systems."
Rivian's senior vice president of autonomy and AI, James Philbin, acknowledged the gap and framed it as the company's next priority. "Tesla's system you use is a point-to-point system," Philbin said. "That's the next big leap for us in a way, is getting to that same point-to-point type interaction and that system where it really does the full driving task." Rivian expects to deliver point-to-point driving before the end of this year.
During the Rivian drives, the company's in-vehicle AI assistant — which launched in its vehicles on May 12, 2026 — described its own ADAS as "an unmatched blend of safety and technology." Rivian says its system includes additional safety guardrails that Tesla does not use, reflecting a design philosophy that prioritizes cautious constraint over maximum autonomy.
On pricing, the three major ADAS offerings now carry distinct subscription structures. Tesla's FSD runs $99 a month. Rivian's Autonomy+ costs $49.99 a month or $2,500 as a lifetime vehicle purchase. GM's Super Cruise is available for $39.99 a month or $399 annually.
The competitive landscape highlights how far GM and Ford have fallen behind in the ADAS race. GM's Super Cruise pioneered hands-free highway driving — it was first tested a year before its 2017 debut — but the company was slow to expand its capabilities beyond geography and lane changes. Ford similarly matched GM on highways but has not delivered hands-free non-highway driving. Both automakers are working on so-called eyes-off capabilities, though those systems are not expected until 2028.
Rivian credits its progress to a push toward vertical integration, including a new generation of software and electric vehicle architecture. Piper Sandler analyst Alexander Potter upgraded Rivian's stock last month and cited that strategy directly. "We favor self-reliant (and properly-valued) companies that are building next-gen machines using in-house expertise," Potter wrote in an investor note. "As volume rises, Rivian should be better able to monetize software and services, a key benefit of vertical integration."
The competitive stakes extend beyond the driving experience itself. Rivian Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid said the company designs vehicles with enough hardware "headroom" to support roughly seven to ten years of software upgrades, and commits to providing safety and security updates indefinitely. That long-term support question is growing in significance as the average U.S. vehicle age rises to 12.8 years, according to Mobility Global.
No vehicle currently on sale is fully autonomous — drivers are required to remain attentive and ready to take over at any time — but the race to expand hands-free capabilities is intensifying as automakers increasingly treat ADAS as a recurring software revenue stream. How quickly Rivian can close the remaining gap with Tesla's point-to-point system will be a key test of whether its vertical integration strategy can translate engineering momentum into market share.
